Yom Iyun in Consumerism & Jewish Buyer Responsibilities

On Sunday 1 March 2009, the Center for Modern Torah Leadership and Uri L'Tzedek held a joint program on "Consumerism and Jewish Buyer Responsibilities" at the Boston University Hillel. Roughly twenty people were in attendance for the afternoon program.

Starting off with some case studies discussed first in small groups and then within the larger group to help frame the larger discussion, the program then moved on to two lectures.

The first of the two lectures was given by Rabbi Aryeh Klapper, the Founder & Dean of the CMTL, spoke on "May One Buy Widgets from Slimeballs? Lifnei Iver and its Limits".

The second of the two lectures was delivered by Shmuly Yankelowitz, the Founder and Co-Director of ULT, who spoke on "Relationship between Desire and Responsibility: The Torah’s Positive Consumer Ethic" (source sheet).
