In year three of my rabbinical training, as part of my school's curriculum that third and fourth year students have internships, I interned at Beth David Synagogue in West Hartford, CT. My mentoring rabbi was Rabbi Yitzchok Adler, who has been at the shul for over a dozen of years.
For my internship, I went up to West Hartford on a monthly basis, usually having spoken on Friday night, giving a devar Torah between kabbalat Shabbat and Ma’ariv. The first two times and the last visit, I gave the sermon in the main sanctuary on shabbas morning. Six of the visits, I taught a “Worship Workshop” class on topics of prayer on shabbas morning.
